Brief guide to Tetum pronunciation

Tetum uses the same characters as we use in English, but with variations on the way they are pronounced.
In text in this lesson, pronunciation is in brackets and italics after words or phrases .. eg diak (dee-ark)

The five vowels are the same as in English:
a is pronounced as in "art"
e is pronounced as in "bed"
i is pronounced as in "ski"
o is pronounced as in "hot"
u is pronounced as in "put"

Consonants are the same as in English but pronunciation varies:
g is pronounced as in "gold"
j is pronounced as z in "zebra"
s is pronounced as in "soft"
x is pronounced as sh as in "Xanana"
