Al-Amiriyah Shelter - slaughter of the innocents

In 1991, during the American bombing raids on Baghdad, hundreds of people took shelter from the bombs in the Al-Amiriyah Shelter. This single level concrete building provided basic shelter.

Two bombs came through the roof. The first one exploded and sealed all of the exits. The second raised the temperature to around 1000 degrees and within minutes 407 people had died from horrific burns. Body fluids were melted into the concrete floor.

Today the building stands unchanged, a stark reminder of the horrors of war and the death of innocent women and children in the mistakes of battle. This is a mistake which must not be allowed to happen again.
